You may be confused about everything else, but you're quite sure about that one statement. You can't kick the bucket the way you did and not be quite damned sure that you're dead.
One moment you were walking along, your life proceding as (ab)normally as could be expected, and then *WHAM*... you were gazing in shock at the body that used to be you .
You do not know how long you stood there...or rather how long your ghost hovered there... gaping at your soul's previous residence. It was quite a while you believe. Finally you felt the inexorable pull of a force, faintly at first but growing stronger with every moment that you lingered besides your body. You rather reluctantly gave up your vigil over your ex-self and began to drift along, letting the unseen power pull you to whatever destiny awaited you in the next 'life'.
And here you are. Dead. Yes, you would think you would have gotten used to it by now. Apparently you're not adjusting to the grieving process very well. Your current surroundings isn't improving your mood much either.
You are...how to explain where you are? It is nothing that any living person can experience or understand. You are surrounded by a some-how familiar white, as far your non-existent eyes can see. It's rather disconcerting, and yet peaceful as well. The very embodiment of 'the white light' which near-death survivors are forever describing... except you somehow doubt that a giant spiral staircase belonged in any of those descriptions.
It hovers before you, the only thing that breaks the comforting monotony of the whiteness. An elegantly carved spiral staircase that would grace even the most exquisite of palaces, it stetches above you and below you leading to nowhere.
And here you stare and wait.
You will have to make a choice eventually.
Heaven or hell, future or past, dreams or memories... up or down.
