Stuck between a fire and a hard place [page 2]

Edmund awoke with a start. The annoying, consistant beep of the fire alarm was ringing madly. Smoke already began to fill the room. Edmund rushed from his bedroom into the main living area of his two-room apartment. Smoke was pooring heavily from the cracks of the door to the hall. He quickly ran to the window on the other side of the room and opened the door. He stepped out on the fire escape and started down. Edmund stopped as screams of a little girl could be heard from the floor above. He looked up and saw the her trying desperatly to open the window with out much success. Her room was full of smoke and she was already coughing heavily.

Edmund runs up the fire escape stairs to try and help the child.
Edmund continues down the fire escape, its not his child or responsibility to save her.
