: The Warp
[page 2]
John was just a regular guy. He had a regular job, lived in a regular neighbourhood, with a regular wife and two regular kids. It was another regular day in the life of John. He got up, got ready and went to work. He got on the train, and everything seemed to be going pretty regular. But whatever the start of this day was looking like, it was going to end up to be a pretty major day for him. It was promotion day. His boss had praised him on his hard work and effort. There was a space open in management, and John was hoping, well I think you can guess.
John got to work at pretty much the regular time. He took a deep breath and entered the building. After thirty years of hard work, maybe just this once he might make something good of his career. He was directed towards his bosses office, and knocked the door. The tidied himself, and then a brisk, harsh voice said, 'Come in,'. John went in and closed the door behind him. He was in there for a good quarter of an hour, and then he emerged, smiling. He had got the job. He went home that evening a changed man. His life was going great. He may only have a regular house and regular dumb kids, and wife that forgot things and burnt his dinners, but now he was 'In Charge Of General Investment' That carried a lot of responsibility! He wasn't regular anymore!
When he got home, the kids had done their assignments, his wife had cooked a wonderful spread, and everyone was laughing about and being happy. Things were great! They were just sitting down, when the floor began to tremble and the table shook. The kids got underneath the table, and John's wife secured anything she could down, and joined them. The sound of breaking glass echoed around them and drowned out the screams of the kids. The wall behind John erupted with plaster, and showered over him. A strange, multi-coloured phenomenon took the place of the wall. A great wind was heading towards it. Bits of cutlery flew about the room. John grabbed onto the table, and his legs flew up into the air. He began to lose his grip, and as finally the last digit slipped, the last thing he heard was the screaming of his loving wife. The deafening noise stopped, and was replaced with complete silence. He opened his eyes.
All around him was a medieval style room. On the walls were old tapestries of ancient battles, and large double-sided axes. He looked down at his clothes, and saw they were ripped to shreds. At the far end of the room was a staircase. From above was a terrible screaming, and below was nothing but blackness. Today he had been promoted, and made happy. Now he had lost everything. His wife, his house, his kids, his job. John decided that there was no point hanging about here, it couldn't get any worse. Behind his back, he crossed his fingers.
