So this is it, thought Daniel, looking around him at the stone walls and floor of the dim corridor in which he found himself. Is this what it's like to be dead? It was dark here, and cold. In the distance, the faint drip, drip, drip of water could be heard. "Huh," said Daniel in a disappointed fashion. "I'd thought Heaven would be more . . . colorful. Light. Full of harpsong and clouds and lots of ex-people." Unfortunately, things are rarely as we expect them to be. Then again, thought Daniel, Maybe I'm not dead at all. But if I survived that car wreck, where am I now?

Daniel took one more look around him, and his eye lighted on the stairs at the end of the corridor. There were two staircases, one going up and one going down. From the staircase going up, Daniel could barely hear a soft, faint sound, almost like someone or something breathing.
